Introducing New Artist " Samuel Johnson "

A curved back lip. The form that continues is carved into four ridges, such is the beauty of Jōmon, a nicely fitting size for your hand. Greatly influenced by Takashi Nakazato's unglazed Karatsu Nanban, black, or at times red, what appears is a scenery of light and shadow.

Born in Minnesota, Samuel Johnson apprenticed under Richard Bresnahan. In Denmark, he met his idol, Takashi Nakazato. While studying under Ryoji Koie in Japan, Sam went to Tanegashima to explore the roots of Takashi Nakazato's Karatsu Nanban.

What is so appealing about him is his honesty and hardworking character. He drives straight forward with an honest conviction and this shows in his works. Samuel Johnson's creations come from his various experiences that are turned into his artworks. Of his work, there is still much more to be explored, and I want to be there to see it when it happens.

Samuel Johson's works are available at Sara Japanese Pottery.

Samuel Johnson was born on the Eastern prairie of the Red River Valley in 1973. After studying painting and ceramics at the University of Minnesota at Morris, he served a three and half year apprenticeship in pottery under Richard Bresnahan. In 2000, he was invited as a guest of Denmark’s Design School to study Scandinavian Ceramic design in Copenhagen; while also working at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center,  and as an assistant in private porcelain studios. After working for a short period in a studio in New York, he traveled to Japan as a studio guest of Koie Ryoji. In 2005, Johnson earned graduate degrees in fine art from the University of Iowa. He is currently an Associate Professor of Art at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Central Minnesota and serves on the Board of Directors of Artaxis.org.
