Sara Japanese Pottery will present an exhibition of new
ceramic work by Hanako Nakazao as the sixth
in a series of events to celebrate our 25th years anniversary.
This exhibition will feature side-by-side works made in
both of her studios, one in Karatsu, Japan and the other in Union, Maine. Like
a migrating bird, Nakazato travels and works each year in two different
countries. This regular shift between her native culture in Japan and her
adopted culture in the USA infuses her work with elements at once familiar and
foreign. The exhibition runs September 3, 2014 through September 6,
2014. Sara is located at 950 Lexington Ave (between 69th and 70th St.) An
opening reception will be held September 3rd from 6-8pm.
A 14th generation potter from Japan, Hanako’s
technique and philosophy are rooted in the ceramic traditions of Karatsu,
Japan. But years spent living in the West has influenced her shapes and
surfaces. She makes a wide variety of simple functional forms. Her work is
carried in many galleries and shops throughout Japan and the US.
Nakazato expresses her philosophy as a potter saying,
“Every day is different. Just like you change what you wear based on different
seasons, occasions and your mood, I hope you enjoy the changes in everyday life
through how you use pottery.”

この度
Sara Japanese Pottery 25周年特別企画第6弾 として、中里花子の新作発表の展覧会をお知らせいたします。
この展覧会では、アメリカはメイン州ユニオン、そして日本は九州の唐津でそれぞれ制作した作品をご紹介します。
季節の移ろいとともに旅をする渡り鳥のように、一年のうちにふたつの国をまたぎ作陶をしている中里花子。
故郷日本の文化と異国アメリカの文化の中で生まれる彼女の作品は、どこか懐かしく、そして見る度に新鮮な印象を与えます。
唐津に育ち16歳で単身渡米、以後半生をアメリカで過ごす。日本の独特な食文化に目覚め、大学卒業後帰郷し、父、中里隆より陶芸を学ぶ。2000念の東京、万葉洞での親子展を皮切りに、以後日本、アメリカ各地で数々の個展を展開。2007年に故郷唐津に独自の工房monohanakoを設立。2010年にメイン州にmonohanakowestを設立。現在唐津とメインを半年ずつ行き来して作陶している。
”日々は常々変化しています。季節や折、またはその時のムードに応じて服装を変えるように、うつわの使いかたを工夫することで日々変化する日常を楽しんでいただければと思っています。“
