For Kazu Oba, 2011 was a year of challenge and growth.

Our upcoming show will feature a collection of Kazu’s works from 2011. We will follow Kazu’s travels around the world through his pieces from each destination.

Kazu Oba 2011 Timeline

December 2010 – January 2011

Works alongside his master Takashi Nakazato at Skaelskor in Demmark’s International Ceramic Research Center and Hohr-Grentzhausen, Germany.

February Returns to the US. Works with “Team Takashi” at the Mesa Art Center in Mesa, Arizona.

April “Team Takashi” two firings at *Hananoki Kiln

*Hananoki Kiln=Hananoki Kiln is a historical kiln located in Gifu prefecture, Japan; built by Takashi Nakazato’s master Fujio Koyama. This is the 4^th time for this Hananoki Kiln project; it took 7 weeks for completion of the two firings there.

Making time during production, Kazu visited Kyoto to secure several exhibitions. When Kazu previously visited Kyoto, he was not given the time of day, but after his success in New York, he says that galleries in Kyoto are responding positively.

July Kazu returns home to Boulder, CO. However, with no time to lose, he flies to Northern Arizona University in Blackstaff, AZ for the construction of the “Two Headed Dragon Kiln” together with “Team Takashi”.

*Two Headed Dragon Kiln=An advanced version of the train kiln (shaped like a steam locomotive, hence the name). Instead of firing from one side, making another head enables firing from two sides. Switch back refers to firing from one side, then the other side, during one firing.

August Kazu returns home to Boulder where he prepares for his exhibition at the Bobby Walker Fine Arts in Denver. This exhibition was a Four Man Show, including Takashi Nakazato and Kazu Oba.

During this exhibition, Kazu showed pieces which utilized form and technique from his other master, Jerry Wingren. Kazu used Stone and Wood as mediums for his sculptures. The exhibition added another layer to Kazu Oba, not only potter but as a versatile artist.

We joined Kazu at the opening reception and spent a few days with him. During this time we were honored to meet the many influential people surrounding Kazu, and also grew our knowledge of who Kazu Oba is.

September Kazu one again returns to Denmark. While awaiting Takashi Nakazato, Kazu concentrated on production of his own pieces. He returned to Denmark to complete firing on pieces from earlier in the year, and also for a Two Man Exhibition. The opening reception was a huge success with the Ambassador of Japan in attendance.

October Kazu completes his Germany workshop with great success.

He entertained all who were part of the workshop to a formal dinner, in true Kazu style. Kazu completed all firings for his world tour 2011.

Works from Germany will be shown in a Four Man Show with Fritz Rossman, Susanne Lukacs-Ringel, Takashi Nakazato, and Kazu Oba this fall in Tokyo and Fukuoka, Japan.

November – December 2011

Kazu returned home to Boulder and began work on his own studio, “Mercury Studios”.

Our exhibition, "The Way of Tea Ceremony from Kaga" will feature teaware and other traditional art pieces from Kaga. The pieces have been produced by a group of young artists who have studied and trained in Kaga's rich tradition and culture.

The Kutani pieces will feature traditional Blue & White, Red, and other painted pieces. We will also be introducing the beautiful lacquer pieces of the Yamanaka style. In addition to teaware, the exhibition includes other pieces for daily use. The seven artists' techniques and craftsmanship have grown since last year’s show at Sara, and all are excited to show you their world of delicately produced pieces.

The opening reception will feature a tea ceremony by Kutani artist and Chajin (tea connoisseur)Naoki Imono. Kutani artist Ruri Takeuchi will also be painting during the opening, don't miss this chance to see her delicate paint work live.

The long awaited Spring has finally arrived!

On April 7th thru 9th, Sara Japanese Pottery will be holding our annual "Flower and Vase Show".
In addition to our beautiful floral arrangements, we will be featuring the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
For our opening reception on April 7th (Thurs), we will host a "Hanami Chakai"; the enjoyment of sipping tea under blooming flowers while seated on a Tatami platform, designed by architect Joe Kobyashi.

Please join us to experience the art of Japanese Tea Ceremony while admiring the spectacular floral arrangements from Plaza Flowers. This is a great event for all! A great big thank you to all of you who attended our Kazu Oba OMOTENASHI Reception last Thursday! It was great seeing everyone. The event was a huge success. We hope everyone enjoyed Kazu's beautiful pottery and the OMOTENASHI experience of Japanese hospitality.

Wasn't the food prepared by Kazu delicious? Can't forget the sake, Mizbasho and Ninki-ichi.

We even had a special guest via Skype... Kazu's master Takashi Nakazato.

As you can see from Kazu's BIG SMILE, he went home extremely happy and sends his best to everyone who helped make his New York debut so memorable.

Kazu Oba could be the last apprentice of Takashi Nakazato as he no longer takes apprentices.Oba himself confesses that he was the worst of Nakazato's apprentices.

Born 1971 in Kobe, Japan, Oba first moved to the states in 1989. In 1999 he began his apprenticeship under sculptor Jerry Wingren and has occasionally worked with him in Sweden. In 2001 he had his first encounter with Nakazato at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado. The first day they met, Nakazato invited Oba to a dinner at his home, a dinner prepared by Nakazato himself. Oba strongly wanted to become Nakazato's apprentice, however some time before this meeting Nakazato had made public that he will no longer be taking apprentices. Knowing this Oba could not bring himself to ask Nakazato to take him as an apprentice. Two years went by, still Oba yearned to become Nakazato's apprentice. Probably sensing Oba's wish, Nakazato asked Oba if he wanted to become his apprentice. In 2003 Oba's dream finally became reality as he started his new life in Karatsu as Nakazato's apprentice. However this dream did not last long, Nakazato said to Oba, "Perhaps, becoming a potter is not for you. You would be best off finding another road." Oba returned to Colorado in late 2004 not yet ready to give up on his dreams of becoming a potter. His belief is this, being able to appreciate the quality and the greatness of Nakazato's work meant that one day he could possibly achieve that, and with this belief he continues to produce in his studio. For the following years, he has often worked with Nakazato as an assistant when Nakazato visited various locations. This winter they are invited to produce work at art centers in Denmark, Germany, Arizona and back in Colorado. Living side by side with Nakazato, Oba has seen Nakazato not merely as a pottery teacher, but rather a master for life. In the spring of 2009 his persistence and beliefs began to bear fruit, as Nakazato acknowledged Oba's work and invited him to a show with him at Ichibankan Gallery in Fukuoka, Japan. Since then they have been jointly shown at Walker fine Art in Colorado in the fall, again at Ichibankan in the spring this year and at Manyoudou in Ginza, Tokyo.His selected collections include the Denver Art Museum and the Idemitsu Museum.
This reception is a celebration of Kazu Oba's debut in New York. The artist himself will welcome each one of you with his handmade Japanese cuisine presented on his works of art. Japanese Sakes, Ninki-ichi and Mizbasho will be served to accompany Oba's handmade foods. Please join us and witness the moment as the Ugly Duckling takes flight for the first time as a Swan .

Sep. 11th was one of the Busiest Saturday's for New Yorker's I believe.

With the end of summer, being the day right after the holidays, Tennis match and Mike Weber Show@ Sara Japanese Pottery!!

During the daytime we were having such a calm and relaxing mood on upper east side.Some of Mike's big fans came to talk.

Then around 6 pm when reception started a lot of people came to the show to talk with Mike!!

Mike Weber-Sculpture and Vessel-2010

Mike Weber is going to come to New York from his deep forest in Wisconsin tomorrow.

It is so exiting to see him once a while.

Mike Weber -Sculpture and Vessel-

Mike Weber has a very unique career of spanning over 40 years.

The first 20 years was spent creating and showing colorful sculptures together with the students of Spanish artist Miro. Then came the next 20 years, where he suddenly turned his focus to Japanese influenced bowls. Mike Weber Sculpture and Vessel show, taking place at Sara Japanese Pottery on Lexington Avenue, will focus on this second half of his great career through his most recent works.

Since building a small Anagama kiln at the recommendation of Shiro Tsujimura, Mike's works have flourished into a whole new level. Mike only uses red pine wood from start to finish for his firings, perhaps this is the secret to the unbelievable results of his works.

Mike once told me, " I'd rather use clay that's like a wild horse, difficult and hard to handle, rather than using refined clay. The wild horse spinning on the wheel results in the clay shaping itself naturally. " You will see this natural side of Mike in his works.

Mike will be at Sara Japanese Pottery for the Artist Reception on September 11th, and will be stopping by the store on the 12th and the 13th. Please come by to meet Mike in person, you are sure to have a wonderful moment with an artist with a fabulous personality.

Wooden Spinning Tops from Hokkaido, Japan.

Small, wooden spinning tops.

Spins very well.

Very famous studio, 45 years of making these tops in Asahikawa city, Hokkaido. Wood and a wheel is all it takes, and each piece is carved by hand.

If you leave on top the coffee table, everyone is sure to pick one up and start spinning. I'm sure you did too, when

you were young.

Watching the tops spin bring a sense of peacefulness.

Kiri Wooden Boxes for Mike's Tea Bowls arrives from Japan!!!

With Mike Weber's show just around the corner, we finally received our much anticipated Kiri wood boxes for his beautiful tea bowls.

The bow is made of silk and each tea bowl has its own custom box, just to its measurements.

The wooden boxes are still unsigned... Mike will be signing each box at the show as they are purchased.

She used our Yururi Plate for fresh tomato salad so beautifully with some herbs and mozzarella cheese.

Mike Weber’s 2010 Anagama Wood-Fire Workshop

I just finished conducting my 14-day 2010 Anagama Wood-Fire Workshop in Herbster, Wisconsin. There was one participant from Australia and the others were from different parts of the United States. All of the pieces fired were created during the workshop. It was a very successful firing with a great group of people. The work really looked good and everyone was happy. I was fortunate enough to create some Hikidashi-Guro tea bowls during the firing.

Currently, I am working in my studio preparing for another firing of my own work.

Harem-125th street Station . Have you ever seen?

Last Saturday, when I was trying to get the Grand Central Station there was no downtown service at the time.

I got an idea to take uptown train to get Harem- 125th street station instead of taking a buss to the Grand Central Station.

That was so quick than I thought and found out interesting details of this station.

The entrance of the station is on the 125th street ,under the railroad.

There are traffic jam always I usually looked from the train.

It is so clean and nice details of interior design, some people are waiting their train comes.

Do you know there is " The National Jazz Museum in Harem" we can see it from the platform?

Here is my train comes!

I gotta go back to home now.

Babe Ruth Tunnel !

My house is very close to along the Bronx River Parkway where I previously posted on my blog as "Bycycle Sundays".

And there is a small tunnel called " Babe Ruth Tunnel" right on the corner of the Leewood Country Club.

This tunnel is so convenience to get through to the Bronx River Parkway and looks also nice!

I love it! I couldn't find his name anywhere by the tunnel, however, people call it "Babe Ruth Tunnel".

I was walking on the platform of Metro North at Grand Central Station yesterday.

I saw it.

The word " THELONIUS MONK" is on the side of one of the car !!

What's this?

As you know Thelonius Monk is one of the greatest pianist of American jazz.

I have googled about this today and found many other names on cars of Metro North and any of them were so interesting.

For instance, there are name of Storm King,Half Moon,Tear of the cloud ,Clearwater, The Mahican, Working Class Hero and more. By the way, My favorite is the "Working Class Hero".

I should be more careful to find out Duke Ellington's name on the "A" train every time when I use subway.

They should have his name on the "A" train, right ?

"Ao" at Joan B Mirviss LTD

I was at Joan B Mirviss Gallery on 78th street and Madison Avenue yesterday.

That was opening reception of "AO"(Blue) exhibition.

I brought my friend "the Small Giant" Ms Kimiyo Mishima from Japan who is famous sculptor from Osaka Japan.

I think this gallery is the best for Japanese contemporary ceramic in New York.

We had a good time in the gallery.

Mishima-sensei and Galleriest Akie-san.

Many different artist's works in "AO"(Blue).

This blue celadon pieces are by Masamichi Yoshikawa.

Joan who is the owner of this Gallery, talking to Mr &Mrs Abe.

That was so nice to see and talk to the people.

Bronx River Parkway Bicycle Sunday !

Do you know Bronx River Parkway in Westchester ?

They are open for the bicycle on Sundays.

We were there with my son Yu and his buddy Andy.

It's a great feeling to speed down the Bronx River Parkway, on the road usually just for cars!

As we ride along the Parkway, we find an ice cream truck.

Perfect time to cool down with ice cream!

"Hikidashi Kuro" Mike's New Black Tea Bowl how it's made

Mike Weber is firing in his red pine forest.

"Hikidashi" translates to "pulling out"from the kiln during the firing process when the temperature is extremely high.

This is one of the traditional techniques used to achieve the Black glaze tea bowl, known as "Hikidashi Kuro"

Look at that! it's glowing bright red!!

As it cools off you can see the darkening of the glaze.

And finally, the finished product.

"Hikidashi Kuro" Tea Bowl is so beautiful!!!

How's your Memorial Weekend?

That was great wether for activities at outside.

We stopped by a Flea Market right before we got hotel.

That was only few minutes visit but was so fan!

Some fresh vegetables were also under the big tent.

I always love to see old tools .

I almost get this "mower" that has nice curved broom.

I got some brunches of white flowers from my garden this morning.
It is called Philadelphus or Orange Blossom.
People says "Wow it smells wonderful!" but to me, the smell is kind of
"glue" from back in the school days...

Liah and Kelly with our vocalist/percussion "KK" were on stage of the Klub 45 room at Connolly's Pub on 45th street.

Their songs are nice,funny and so peaceful!!

They are going to have another gig on Friday at CAFFE VIVALDI (32 Jones St. - off Bleecker) on FRIDAY 5/21 8-9PM

Check it up!

Also, our band the Trutheseekers have a gig at the Living Room from 10 pm on the Ludlow street .

What a wonderful weather we had on Sunday!

We went to end of City Island to have brunch at the Reef Sea Food Restaurant in Bronx!

Big portion fries and reasonable beer, Ocean view and nice breeze.

This place reminds me the Fisherman Wharf in San Francisco but it's only 20 minutes from my house! $50. made all of us 6 people full.

This City Island has one more small island on the side.

We checked that entrance out and found it is a Prison.... Alcatraz?

After brunch we stopped by Pelham Bay, playing with sand and collecting some sea shells and pebbles.

We went a opening reception of Miyako Ishiuchi's photograph exhibition

"Sweet Home Yokosuka"at Andrew Roth Gallery yesterday.

I brought Michelle and Dr Choi with me.

Pictures are from 1976-1980 that make me so nostalgic feeling!(because my home town is in Yokohama where is not too far from Yokosuka.)

Roman Holiday in Bronx!

Went to the Italian street in the Bronx last Sunday with Michelle!

There's a fish market near 178th that lets you eat fresh oysters and clams right on the street.

We walked across the street to buy a bottle of white wine, and enjoyed our first plate of oysters...

Then the next plate of Little Neck Clams, then Cherry Clams...

and then... back to oysters again-:)

After being happily full with our favorites, we ventured into Italy...

Fresh Ricotta, dried tomatoes, prosciutto, and a new favorite in our household, Prima donna cheese. Love visiting this Italian town, makes me feel like I'm really in Italy each time I visit, and it's only a short drive from home-:)

Sunday! Woke up to a BEAUTIFUL Spring Day.

Off to Kensico Dam with my son and friends.

Do you know Kensico Dam? It's a wonderful park a bit north of White Plains.

With my guitar and son's bike in tow, we arrive at the Park.

It's such a gorgeous day but not too many people in sight...

Looks like we have the whole place to ourselves!!

Kid's on their bikes and father's strumming our guitars, what a Sunday!

Lush green trees...

... And... here's the Dam, haven't seen the water yet, maybe next time.
